A fresh start of the year: I just unsubscribed from over 50 newsletters that only fill my inbox, but don't produce any real value, either for myself, my projects or for Joel News. Also I will promptly unsubscribe from any freshly arriving news or marketing e-mail that I didn't sign up for in the first place. The Pareto principle (80% of the outputs result from 20% of the inputs) can be applied to many areas of life, but is certainly valid in the realm of e-mail. For Joel News the ratio is even 99:1, because only 1% of the news I hear or receive makes it into Joel News, and this 1% comes from 20% of my sources and connections. A good reason to get rid of the 80% of newsletters that are only eating mailbox space and handling time.
