Appreciating brother Paul
I've always had a sort of a love-hate relationship with brother Paul, especially his hard-to-really-grasp paulinic wordiness. But today, reading through 1 Corinthians in The Message, I started to appreciate his apostolic passion, his wisdom and practical insight, his releasing father heart. It's amazing what a translation can do for one's image...
The Message is more a paraphrase than a translation, I'm afraid.
A translation that's still quite a bit more readable than your usual English translation (Dutch ones, too, Marc?) would be J.B. Phillips' version, available on-line, with 1-Corinthians given here: http://www.ccel.org/bible/phillips/CP07Cor1.htm
That said, conveying passion is one of Edwards' big strenght. I'm just not always sure whether it's Edwards' passion or that of the writers being conveyed.
That aside, given the plethora of English translations and the lack of even one of the gospels in 2500 to 3000 minority tongues, I'm regularly _REALLY_ANNOYED_ at the effort being exerted for still more English translations. I can't mention the number of languages that have only rough, archaic (like KJV in English) or even obsolete translations (like a Wycliffe Bible in English) and doing so may seem trivial in the face of the ones that have nothing. Still for those languages, a better translation might be a better use of these scholarly resources -- perhaps even fuelling resurgent CPMs where one might not otherwise be expected.
